Season's Greetings

Happy Holidays to all and a Happy New Year! By the way, Saks has their 8am sale December 26th. I'll see you there.

Abra Cadabra

Tis the season for holiday parties. This weekend was one party right after the next. I felt like I was a quick change artist. One thing that kept me on time was my Jiffy Steamer. I love my steamer. A steamer is much faster than an iron, plus it works on many unironable fabrics including knits.

If you want your knits to keep their shape, you must fold them. Do not put them anywhere near a hanger. And when the wrinkle does arrive? With a few strokes of the magic steam, Tada! Wrinkles are gone. I was even ready a few times before my husband. Now that is magic!

Needle (and thread) in a haystack

Everyone likes a sale, though it is a very select number of women that actually enjoy the sport of digging through sale racks. It can be frustrating (and time consuming) to try and find that one perfect sweater or pair of shoes on the 40% rack!

I'm always on the hunt for the perfect pieces for my clients at the perfect price (see this month's Washingtonian where I shopped from start to finish at Filene's Basement!)

Here are my tips:
1.) Have an open mind. If you're looking for a black 8-ply cashmere cardigan with pearl buttons in a size M, you're going to get frustrated really quickly (or be the luckiest woman alive, in which case, put down the sweater and go buy a lottery ticket).

2.) Early bird gets the Dolce. If you want the best selection, get there on the first day. If you want the best deals, get there at the end.

3.) Know the chain of command. First call/private sales, then last call, then the big messy pile in the back of the store, then off to the outlets, then to the liquidators. So if you see something advertised in the paper for a holiday sale, don't expect to find it in their outlet two months later.

4.) Let your freshly manicured fingers do the walking. Besides Bluefly, etc. (or my favorite for accessories, Portero), there are some great shopping sites. One of my favorites is Shop It To Me, where you pick the designers, sizes and stores, and they send you a weekly email of everything in your list that's on sale online. Their list of stores is a bit short (though Saks and Nordstrom's always have lots of items), but I've found some great deals.

Happy shopping!

Express Yourself

We all love to celebrate the holidays, though some of us may go a bit, ahem, overboard. If you have a Christmas sweaters in your closet--and you know who you are…I have one thing to say:

"Don’t! "

If you really want to dress for fun, try getting creative with your socks. I found these adorable fuzzy Santa socks that will get anyone in the holiday spirit at Absolute Socks. And if those don't float your boats, check out the rest of the website: you can get socks for every holiday (check out their Hanukkah selection!) that will keep your tootsies warm.

Baby, it's cold outside

Hats, earmuffs, gloves and scarves are all a must when that winter wind blows. Kohl's is having a half off sale on all winter accessories, including Simply Vera Wang leather gloves.

Personally, my favorite winter accessory is ear muffs. They keep my ears warm and don’t totally mess up my do. Kohls has a cute cheetah set and they also come in solid colors for the non safari type of gal.

For a bit of luxury, I also have a set of Burberry cashmere ear muffs. They make me look forward to those really cold winter days (like today!).

Holiday Fabulous: Do Not Open Until Xmas (S'il Vous Plaît)

Walking into L'Occitane is like entering a boutique in Provence (no wonder, as it is where the company was founded). For me, walking past their doors is never an option, as there is always a scent to try, a crème to sample, a little round soap to smell. Last week, I decided to head in to do a little holiday shopping. Hopefully my sisters will not be reading this.

L’Occitane has wonderful gift baskets. And yes, they are on sale with free delivery! For my sister who travels (hopefully with limited internet access), she's getting the Shea Travel Treasures basket, which includes everything the traveler needs to cleanse and nourish hair, body and face in a travel tote: Milk Soap, Lavender Soap, Shampoo, Conditioner, Verbena Shower Cream, Body Lotion, Pure Shea Butter, and Hand Cream.

And that, dear readers, is simply fabulous.

Style Profile: Andrea Paro Sandler

The next installment in an occasional series of fabulous moms about town...

I've known Andrea Sandler for years. Like 20. We used to--okay, it was twenty years ago, so cut us some slack--fragrance model together. Anyway, if you've ever called down to Daisy Baby with a furniture, clothing or baby sling (I've even called for napping advice) question, chances are it's Andrea you've spoken to. Really down to earth? A walking mom resource? Hilariously hilarous? Yup, that's her alright.

And since the Daisy Fifth Anniversary Sale stages tomorrow (11-8!! 20% off of the whole store!! (save special orders)), I thought this would be the ideal time to post...

Name: Andrea Paro Sandler

Occupation: Owner, Daisy Baby and Daisy Too

Children: Two fabulous girls, 1 and 3-1/2

What's your uniform? Anything, punctuated with Tory Burch shoes.

Secret fashion sin: Sweatpants at home. Big, baggy ones. And I can't bear to throw out any of my True Religion jeans.

Favorite fashion bargain: Any Gap long sleeve cotton shirts

Favorite fashion splurge: I have never met a handbag that I didn't like!

Favorite stores: Daisy Too and Zelaya Footwear, but of course!

Biggest shopping challenge:: Finding the perfect pants and entering a dressing room with a bathing suit

Beauty Secret: Lots of Moisturizer!!!!!!!

LoVe, French Style

This one: not in my closet, yet.

Like many women, and some men I know, I love handbags. All kinds of bags: large, small, from the practical to the insanely impractical, I love them all.

One bag I have had my eyes on for years is the LV satchel. Normally, I go for snakeskin or ultra soft leather, and I am not much of a label girl, but there is something so European and chic to me about this particular Louis Vuitton: its clean lines and its classic style, perhaps. And as much as I try to think that I'm not influenced by advertising, the image of Catherine Deneuve sitting atop her pile of LV luggage just makes me want to wrap myself in an ultra-chic trench and head off on a train to somewhere (anywhere, actually--just a day off from the kids would be nice!).

Then today, while searching online for a gift for my husband, an email came across: the opening of the LV e-boutique. A quick browse, a mental slap on the wrist for thinking of myself ahead of others for a second during this holiday, then back to shopping for the family.

But honey, if you're reading this, the website is here.

Guess Who's Turning Five?

This Thursday is a fabulous pre-shopping event: the Daisy Too Fifth Anniversary!

All day, they'll be offering 20% off of EVERYTHING in the store (not just "selected sale merchandise", but it does exclude special orders), with cocktails and appies at night. And it's not just Daisy Too's racks of Karta, DVF and Thorn; it's also Zelaya Shoes (and yes, those Sanvers I didn't get to this weekend), AND Daisy Baby and their amazing selection of baby and kids clothing, bedding and accessories.

See you there!

Friday Fabulous

So the weekend of hosting thirty was a bit crazier than expected, so here's a late post! Hope your holiday was fabulous!

As I was doing my usual morning browse-internet style, I came upon this sale item at Nordie's: the Fiona Top (at 40% off!)

Here's why I love it: first, notice how the scoop neck shows her neck and collar bone, elongating her neck and chest. Quite flattering. And the belted tie creates a curvier waist. They have made the tie the same color as the shirt, very smart.

Love the color, too. This is a must try!

Wednesday Q&A

Q. from Sue
I am going thru my closet and had a question…can I wear crew neck sweaters?

A. from Joyce
The crew neck is adorable on children and really skinny small chested women. Crew necks can make you look like you have no neck or even worse- a saggy chest. Most woman look better in scoop and v necks. They actually give the illusion of a longer neck and flatter your collarbone and chest, or as the French say, declote. Without seeing you in them it is hard for me to say, but try this…put a crew neck on and look in the mirror, then try on a vneck and see the difference for yourself.

Dressing More Than The Turkey

What to wear on Thursday?
As every year, Thanksgiving dinner will be at my house. So, with 30 people coming over I want to look fab, stay cool (it gets just a bit hot in the kitchen), and, most of al,l be comfortable.

This year's option: a sleeveless viscose knit (very thin and breathable) dress by Laundry with my spanx stockings and black knee high boots. The dress is color blocked in burgundy, blue, and black. This will hide any wine or cranberry sauce spills. Perfect. Now if only preparing the dinner was this easy!

Save Room for Shopping!

The Washington Post Source did a good writeup of sales happening this weekend, but here are a few that they missed:

Harriet Kassman: Their private sale had lots of designer duds for cheap--and now they've put even more on the block. Did you know that they carry Luca Luca? Sonia Rykiel? Lafayette 148? Until very recently, I didn't either. I just heard that they're staging a Lafayette 148 trunk show this winter as well...

Zelaya Shoes: There are a pair of brown and tan booties there that are mine, all mine--a true must have. And they are running 15% off of all full-priced merch on Friday and Saturday, which means that the sapphire blue snakeskin Rebecca Sanver peep toes there are going to be mine as well...

Alex Boutique: They will be serving Vosges chocolate and having 30% off store wide all weekend--plus, as they are such a champion of quality local designers (yes, there are a handful!), they will be giving a gift with any purchase of $200 or more from local designers De Nada or Iky Clothing.

Sangaree: They are running a 30% off sale this weekend on selected fall merchandise. Their collection is really well edited, which means that you're bound to find beauty + bargains.

Happy Shopping!

Friday Fabulous: As Seen On TV!

A few weeks back, Channel 9 news anchor Lesli Foster contacted me about doing a news story on That Mom. For the record, Lesli is even more beautiful in person and twice as lovely.

Last night it aired on the 5 o’clock news. My family, a few friends and I got together to watch it. Normally, I do not have the news on in front of my kids, but news stories I wouldn't want my seven year old to see aside, it was really fun to see how they edited and ran the story. It was a bird’s eye view into what I do, and I think they did a great job of telling the story if I may say so myself!

And Gabriella, you were awesome. Thank you, my brave, gorgeous and confident client, for allowing the crew to film you!

Quotes That Stick With You

When I was first out of college, an older coworker and I were talking about what to wear to an event. I told her that I did not own a little black dress. The exact quote in reply was, “You don’t have a black dress? Get a life!” I'm not sure if was the shock that registered on her face or the quote itself, but I nearly fell off of my chair laughing.

But I finally went out and bought my very first LBD that very week, the beginning of a long collection.

My new favorite addition is a sleeveless knee-length Theory dress named Poole. Why do I love this dress? Because it has no waist. It hangs nicely, fitting closely to my form without clinging, while allowing me to relax and not worry if I want that piece of cake for dessert.

I found it on the sale rack (with an 50% additional off!) in the Theory store at Leesburg Outlets. And that makes me love it even more. But remember what I always say, “Don’t buy anything on sale that you wouldn’t pay full price for!”

Champagne, Celebs & Cards

R. Nichols is one of those artists that as soon as you see his work, you know exactly who he is. But did you know that he's originally from DC?

Well, he's coming back for a fabulous party on Wednesday from 6-9, 1430 K Street, NW at Apres Peau, thrown by Dr. Tina Alster and planned by a mutual friend of his and mine. He designed a Washington-based line featuring his iconic woman at the Washington Monument and Jefferson Memorial (I've seen them both--Washington is cute, but Jefferson is my favorite!).

Also, if you can snap one up, he's selling signed, numbered limited-edition prints of his works. There are only 25 available, and this is the first series of these he has ever done. How exciting!

Rsvp at 202.783.0022, events@aprespeau.com. See you there!

Flipping Back Through My Date Book

A slight departure from what I usually write, I thought I'd share my past few days.

Wednesday night, my husband and I went to the Washingtonian Best Dressed Party at Agraria Restaurant in Georgetown. No pressure on what to wear to that! I was delighted to see that everyone was dressed differently, really showing their own sense of style. When you express your individuality through your clothes, even if it is very subtle you instantly become more interesting. Dont be afraid to take a little chance when dressing, have fun!

Thursday was also an interesting day. I was asked by a local tv station if they could film me working. It was not easy finding a willing participant. It's hard enough to let someone (me) into your closet, but with a camera crew-that takes it to a whole new level. My brave and beautiful client "G" graciously opened her home and closet to us. In her closet we found the usual suspects...things that might fit again someday, those that overworn, shoulder pads, etc... Basically a closet that represented the busy mom with little time for herself, in need of an update. By going to through her closet, she was reminded of who she was and what she wanted to be today. Still a mom, but also the woman she used to be, stylish and beautful. My hats off to "G" and congratulations on her new found self! It's due to air on the 15th--details to follow!

Wednesday Q&A: Anything Goes

Q from Erin: I always hear about this trend and that trend, and yet I see so many different styles while shopping, all of them completely different. How do I avoid making missteps?

A from Joyce: These days, anything goes. Instead of focusing on what may or may not be the latest trend, try and find a style that is flattering to your body type and lifestyle. Then pick up a copy of InStyle or Lucky Magazine. If you see something that appeals to you add it to your wardrobe. Try adding a trendy accessory, like a handbags or pair of shoes. That way when the trend goes out you will still have your basic wardrobe intact.

Desperately Seeking Sweaters

As I pulled out my sweaters for winter this weekend, I realized that my cashmeres were in short supply. Some just needed to be retired because last year I loved them a little to much. Plus I'm always on the hunt for the perfect one, preferably about 80-ply, most preferably on sale for eight dollars.

Bloomingdale's has a really nice selection at very reasonable prices. Their Sutton line always seems to be on sale, and their Aqua line has really nice sweaters. All are supersoft and come in great colors.

If you're willing to search through racks, Loehmanns has a good selection too. And if cashmere is not your thing try Anthropologie--as with every season, they have a great selection, mostly wool blends.

As for me, I think I'll take this Sutton in chocolate brown, and dream of adding a little Loro Piana to my repertoire. Maybe someday.

30 is the new 30

For some reason, this is a huge anniversary year in retail. It's Neiman Marcus' 100th (I heard that the celebration in Dallas a few weeks ago, while a bit humongous, was pretty amazing), Saks also hit the century mark (fun new logo, exclusive anniversary products, to say nothing of 10021-SHOE), Daisy Too and Alex both turn 5 this month to name a few.

And this Wednesday, a whole building turns 30: Mazza Gallerie.

Neiman Marcus will be holding its big private sale (I heard even Mayor Fenty is coming in for a lap); Pampallonia and Harriet Kassman are having a champagne-doused receptions; there will be wine bars, apps and modeling on every floor, and I believe every store is participating with giveaways and receptions of their own. The night is being sponsored by Washington Life magazine and the newly-opened Rock Creek Restaurant on the third floor, where the after-party will be held (and you might as well grab some dinner while you're there, as I've heard that it's pretty fabulous).

This, of course, happens to be going on on a very fun night for me: the Washingtonian Best Dressed party is also being held that night. It was such an honor to be included--now I can't wait to party!

So no matter where you end up, just look your best, grab a glass of champers and enjoy!

Friday Fabulous: Paper not Plugs

I'm just a simple girl. I have my palm pilot, Tom Tom, computer, and my coveted electric coffee maker with auto grind, but the truth of the matter is that I am not a high tech gal and I love paper.

I like to have a paper calendar, notecards and note pads. My new love is my Graphic Image Date Book and also their Birthday Book. We all need to stay organized and as I am getting busier (having NOTHING to do with getting older) I cannot remember birthdays anymore. These leather bound in books are neat and well organized and fit right in my purse.

Graphic Design can be purchased in some stores, but they have a website for shopping, then you call their 800 number to order-and you get to speak to live people! Imagine that.

Wednesday Q&A: Spooky Pricetags

Q from Alice: I went to your fashion show last week, I loved the looks but not the price tags, any suggestions?

A from Joyce: I get cha. Yes, Saturday I was at Target. They have jeweled short sleeve tops that look great. I also saw several really cute machine washable dresses and sweaters. Once you have decided the look you want. Use it as an inspiration. Then make a budget for your outfit. Plan on spending the most on your basic pieces and the least on the trendy. Try Target, H&M, Loehmann's, Kohl's. You do not have to go broke to look great.

Happy Toes

As I ran around all day Friday in the pouring rain, accidentally stepping in puddles I smiled because I had on the greatest boots. Weatherproof and comfortable AND stylish. Yes, hard to believe but true. LeCanadienne makes the greatest boots, tall, ankle, wedge and heeled. I have them in brown and black. As a busy mom and stylist, I need shoes that I can run errands, work with clients and play with my kids all the while keeping my feet dry and happy. These are perfect.

Shopping Event: Sissy Yates

Sangaree opened up this year to much acclaim. It's incredibly hard--even on a really busy day--to walk past their beautiful windows without at least stopping in to do a lap.

Thursday gives you an excuse to come in and stay for a while: McLean jeweler Sissy Yates (yes, she of the absolute cult following and sister to Alex Wentworth) is having a trunk show and personal appearance at the store, with an (unspecified) portion of proceeds benefiting Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

Friday Fabulous: Kisses All Around

Before I tell you about my new find, I wanted to thank all of you who came to the That Mom Fashion Show.

If you missed it, here's the recap: brand-new Bloomie's fabulousness (including the perfect runway setup), wine, hors d'oevures, about 60 fabulous mommies (and about 15 adorable babies!), beautiful clothes, a slightly botched script, models changing at a speed I never even thought possible, a few laughs, a DVF color-blocked dress that had the dressing rooms lined up 10-deep, Bobbi Brown fabulousness (from the Lipstick Bar for guests to the models' amazing makeup to their fun lipgloss gifts for all), pj's and Uggs, another round of wine, and proceeds benefiting the GW Mammovan Project.

Again, thank you, thank you, thank you.

So now on to more fabulousness:
A friend of a friend sent me Mary Kay Lip Balm, so I tried it. You know how in the winter when you put lip stick on and it is crumbly because your lips are so dry? This makes the ideal first coat to combat exactly that (and I've tried them all). You start with the lip mask for 1 minute and then the lip balm. That's it. I had never tried Mary Kay products before-I am now hooked on this lip balm. It is called Satin Lips. The mask and balm together are only $16. Fabulous!

Style Profile: Corina DuBois

Mix one part NYC cleverness, one part California laidbackness, and a good dose of midwest friendliness and you get Corina DuBois of Stroller Strides and Celebrate Mama! LLC. Yes, she loves moms so much that she exercises them and celebrates them (at her annual Mama festival, which takes place each spring in Montgomery County). That's dedication. She's the latest in our occasional series of fabulous DC-area moms...

Name: Corina DuBois

Occupation: Owner, Stroller Strides Montgomery County & Creator of Celebrate Mama! LLC

Children: Holden, 3 years and Nolan 2 years (both boys)

What's your "uniform?” I work out every day for a living, so I am always wearing workout gear. I LOVE fashion but never have the time to change… so you will see me getting coffee, shopping, at the park still in workout clothes from the morning. Thank Goodness for wicking material!

What is your secret fashion sin? I have expensive taste and a mom budget. So, if I’m not in workout gear, I’m decked out in a strange combo of Old Navy jeans and Stuart Weitzman shoes. I always wonder if I’m going to look up and see that I’m too old for the clothes I like (I secretly like to pick things up at Forever 21). Oh, and I like bejeweled things. I owned a Bedazzler back in the day.

What's your favorite current fashion bargain? Bluefly.com

What's your favorite fashion splurge? SHOES!! SHOES!! SHOES!! And Coach purses. Oh, and every season I buy a fun necklace and bracelet combo to jangle up the jeans and shirt staples.

What are your favorite stores? J Crew, High End Department Stores (Saks, Neimans), lucy (for workout gear) and (sadly) Target

What do you see as your biggest shopping challenge? Not going overboard because I know I generally wear workout clothes and don’t have that many nights out that require 3 inch heels or 3 pairs of boots.

What’s your beauty secret? Thinking I look hot even in workout clothes that I’ve been schlepping around in all day. It does wonders for the image I project. Seriously.

Wednesday Q&A: It's a Keeper!

Q from Lucy: My third child just turned two. Before he gets too out of hand, I want to take a bit of time to get organized and clean my closet.

How do I decide what to get rid of and what to keep?

A from Joyce: When working with clients, I take everything that does not currently fit out of their closet. There will be a lot of things that you want to save, but you must evaluate them honestly. First, what will it take for you to wear them again? (are they close and can be tailored? are you planning on having more children? Planning on losing weight? Was the item a great transitional piece?) Next, divide them into these categories and label and store them neatly away (or take them to the tailor--and do it while you're motivated). Things that you decide you'll never wear again should be donated.

Once you see what you have left, don't be shocked when you realize how little it may seem that you have. But you'll quickly realize that you now have a clean closet filled with the things you actually wear without having to dig through the rest.

Plus once you're clear of the clutter, it will be much easier to develop your list of what you need to create a working wardrobe. If you are not sure what you need, pick up a few magazines, or pick up the phone and give me a call!

My Closet

Each piece of clothing added into my wardrobe is like a piece of the puzzle that is my wardrobe. I think about what it will go with in my closet before I decide to buy. I, too, make a shopping list while standing in my closet before heading out (see, I do follow my own advice!).

So with that, I say welcome, my little purple friend!

Well, its actually more of a deep blue purple plummy kind of shade. Its sleeves: long; its fabric: silk; its neck: scoop, flattering on everyone. Its detail: fun pleating. I must get a decent digital camera. My list said "something new for jeans, gray wool slacks and black skirt." It fits the bill for all three.

I found it at Reiss in Georgetown. I love this store. Their clothes are beautiful and you won't see them anywhere else in town.

Weekend Fabulous: Haute Holiday

Okay, so it's a bit of an extravagance, but I'm really, really thinking about it...

Haute Papier, the Georgetown-headquartered stationery company, has just announced its Haute Holiday Gift Wrapping Service.

You contact them, they pick up your packages, wrap each one gorgeously, then drop them off, all ready to go.

If you live nearby, pickup and delivery is free (Georgetown, Foxhalll, Foggy Bottom); elsewhere in the nearby DC metro region it is a $20 pickup surcharge.

Best of all, they are donating a percentage of all sales of St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.

The service begins November 1 and runs through December 20 (so it will be a no-go for those of us who wait until the verylastsecond); prices start at just $3 for a small package.

Wednesday Q&A: Keeping Up With The Vogueses

Q from Carol: I'm not a frumpy person, but I just can't spend all of my time keeping up with every latest trend (and most aren't that flattering unless you're 5'10" and 100 lbs anyway). But I do want to update a bit. Are there smaller steps you'd recommend?

A from Joyce: Being stylish has more to do with expressing yourself and having confidence than following the trends.

If you live a casual life, look for clothes that fit your life, fit your body and flatter your personal shape. Look for colors that complement your hair color and skin tone. When you shop, buy complete outfits to create a polished look, and ask the salesperson (or me!) what else you think the pants/top/skirt would look good with, and see if any of that matches what is already in your closet.

The most stylish women in the world dress to express, and never copy every last trend.

And two other reminders: 1.) get a new bra with that new outfit and b.) finish your look with a great hair cut. (My favorite salon is One80 in D.C., as they're great with transformative color).

Tuesday: Let It Snow!

Is anyone else sick of this hot weather?
I want to wear all my great new fall clothes!
Here are the top three bargins I am dying to wear…

1.A Sally Tseng Bogart wool Jacket in black, from My Sister’s Closet in Vienna Va. I found it at the District Sample Sale ($546.00 for $50!)

2. A dark gray wool Classiques sweater with ruffles at the collar and sleeves(from the July presale at Nordstoms ($198.00 for $ 129.90)

3. A black velvet cap by Scala Pronto from Loehmanns ($17.99)

You may have seen a blurb or two printed up, and you may get an invitation in the mail this week, but no matter what, here's a little preview:

Friday Fatbulous: TMI

I really do not want to know how much fat there is in McDonalds French fries. I know they are not good for me; I know that if I eat too many my jeans will be tight. But it is something I choose to overlook as I'm shoving in a handful in my mouth as I'm heading down the road to the next child’s sporting event.

However, there are times less frantic when I am curious, and do appreciate when a restaurant offers healthy selections.

Rock Creek Restaurant in DC has created a delicious menu with low calorie and fat alternatives. Health specifics are listed in the menu, but on a separate page if you simply just need to know.

Wednesday Q&A: Blueberry or Poppy?

Q from Susan: I really want to wear jeans that don’t show my post-baby muffin top, but don't look like mom jeans, either. Any suggestions?

A from Joyce: It's not difficult, it just takes a little time to find the perfect pair for you. Luckily, waists are starting to creep up, giving you some options for jeans that hit you right at the waist. If they are too low they will transform you into a doughy pastry; too high and you'll get the mom jean effect. (And of course, NO PLEATS. EVER.)

Also, remember that if you wear jeans a lot, it's better to invest in a few pairs that look great and that you can wear out and about than to get a few unflattering pairs that you won't want to leave the house in.

Try these;
James Jeans, Hector ($185)
Joe’s Jeans, Muse ($172)
Chip and Pepper’s Olivia ($165)
All these and more can be found at the Denim Bar Online.

My Closet: Unwired

Let’s talk about wire hangers.

They are good for two things:
1.) Making mobiles with your kids;
2.) Unlocking doors.

That is IT.

So, if you are guilty-and you know who you are--get rid of those clothes-killing hangers once and for all.

Done? Good. Now here are some more tips to save your clothes:
-All knits must be folded
-All stretch fabrics (except jeans) must be folded.
-Plastic hangers are great; the ones from department stores are perfect and free.

If you choose to buy your hangers, I like The Great American Hanger Company, www.hangers.com

Shopping Event: Taste of Zelaya!

If you're heading over to the Taste of Bethesda festival this coming weekend (50 restaurants participating--how can you not?), definitely stop by Zelaya Shoes for their underground, quite fabulous sale.

If you haven't been, Zelaya is the shoe store located in the back of Daisy Too, and for this one day, I've heard that all of their back rack sale shoes (including some fabulous fall selections) will be between 80 - 90% off!

And after you've eaten your way through 50 restaurants, really, shoes are the only thing you'll feel like shopping for.

Friday Fabulous: More on the Hands

All year round, but especially now that the fall chill is about to set in, hand creams and lotions are essential.

Imagine yourself, perfection from head to toe...

Hair newly cut and colored by One80 Salon in DC (my favorite place for cut and color--ask for Remi)

Dressed in an adorable suit with a great pair of heels you just purchased from the new Bloomingdales in Chevy Chase (though hands off the Marc Jacobs patents--they're mine!)

And then you go to shake hands and....BLECH!
Dry, gross, all cracked with those little red lines. Talk about killing a look!

So first, get the to a manicure. Then, remember your hand cream!

These are the ones I love:
Natura Bisse Hand Silk Cream
$30.00
www.barneys.com

Clarins Age-Control Hand Lotion SPF 15
$29.00
www.bloomingdales.com

And my new favorite
Neutrogena’s New Norwegian Formula Fast Absorbing Hand Cream
It has a light scent and does not feel sticky. I love it!

Thursday Fashion Profile: Meet the Fashionista

This week's profile is perhaps the hardest working mother in Washington, and is definitely one of the nicest. Do YOU get up at 4:30 on Sundays to go to work? Maybe, but then you get to go back to sleep eventually. Not her, but you'll never see her complain, and you'll never see her looking less than utterly, completely fashionable. And as a native Northern Californian, she always has a fantastic bottle of wine open and ready to serve...

Name: Michelle Jaconi

Occupation: Producer & Political Analyst, Meet the Press

Children: 1 full of pluck, Miss Kylie Kathryn, 7 months-old

What's your "uniform?” Black leggings (machine washable and one of the few styles of pants that fit me as I am 6 feet tall), ballet flats (I love heels, but the joke is that I can’t turn left if I wear heels, as my legs barely fit under the steering wheel as it is), and a crisp white shirt (who has time to iron? I buy a men’s shirt and throw it in with my husband’s dry cleaning and nothing gives you the illusion of being put together more than lip gloss and a little starch).

What is your secret fashion sin? I break out my Uggs from high school at the first sign of snow. My friends say they stand for “ugg-ly” but despite their short-lived East coast trend, as a California-native, I will always love them (despite their winter practicality, they are surfer girl favorites). So they do double duty.

What's your favorite current fashion bargain? I got Nine West flats that are such superb Chanel knock offs that my husband is irritated he bought me the real ones for Christmas (I save his for fancy occasions, and use mine for the spit-up-filled day-to-day).

What's your favorite fashion splurge? Two words, many meanings: Louis Vuitton.

What are your favorite stores? I am a stationery & accessory junkie, so I love Room with a View and Proper Topper in Georgetown. And, as a nursing mom, Nordstrom is my new favorite place in the world (why other stores do not copy their brilliant design/marketing concept is beyond me.) From their café, to the soft lighting in the women’s lounge, I referred to the store as my “office” when I was on maternity leave (it was too cold in January to go anywhere else). It became my “mother’s circle” as all the savvy new moms were there week after week, so we got to know each other & share advice. There was even a pediatrician who was a regular, and who would answer all our questions! Long live Nordie’s!

What do you see as your biggest shopping challenge? Finding pants that fit. And as much as I would think this would be something peculiar to my 6 foot tall frame, I find that very few people wear pants (and jeans!) that fit well. So, we all need a good tailor (and I need clothes companies to leave more hems).

What's your beauty secret? Smile.

Wednesday Q&A: Free To Good Home

My clients ask, What should I do with the clothes that I am not keeping?

My answer- Donate and Consign.

There are several charities that help women have a fresh start that accept clothing for women entering the workforce.

My favorite:
www.suitedforchange.org
1010 Vermont Avenue, suite 900, Washington, DC 20005
202-293-0351

However, as I've mentioned before, 90% of their need is for clothing sized 16 or higher, so if you have plus-sized clothing, you can make an incredible difference in the life of a Washington-area woman.

Consignment shops are another good option, and there are many in the area, depending on what you have to sell.

For high-end items I recommend:

Inga’s Once Is Not Enough
4830 Mac Arthur Blvd, NW Washington DC
(202) 337-3072

Designer Resale
4801 Saint Elmo Ave
Bethesda, MD 20814
(301) 656-3722

Chic to Chic
15900 Luanne Drive
Gaithersburg, MD
(301) 926-7700

...all are great for digging for yourself, too!

My Closet: Go Bright!

Last week I wrote about the importance of full length mirrors. But there is something more basic and more important: lighting.

How else can you tell if your blacks match or if your dress is see through? (think your dress isn't? A friend found out the hard way--via a comment while walking outside, just yesterday!).

I've been in a lot of closets, and let me tell you, most do not have adequate lighting. Is your skirt chocolate brown with a hint of plum or moss? That can be the starting point for an outfit that is nothing short of incredible. Yet you'll never know for sure without proper lights to pick up on those cues.

My husband, an environmental engineer, decided to replace all of our lights bulbs with N.Vision Energy Star bulbs throughout our house. They are wonderful and will last for 9 years and save gobs of energy, BUT they are fluorescent, and therefore shouldn't go in your closet or in your make up area, as anyone who has ever been in an office restroom knows.

The best light bulbs to dress: GE white bulbs, and plenty of them (I'm sure you can find a way to make up for the energy you'll be wasting--kind of like carbon offsetting).

Event Preview: Show Us Your Bloomie's!

Finally at long last, Bloomie's opens!

It seems like just yesterday that someone drove their car into the side of the Hecht's building. And then one day, I looked up and there was a tall, shiny new, modern brick tribute to all that is good about shopping (though really, what's bad about shopping?) in its place.

A quick peek inside reveals a great addition to the fashion mecca that Chevy Chase has become. Its diverse and high-end collection of labels is centered around a giant skylight--ah, shopping in natural light, hoorah!--and from that center hangs an impressive mobile by the artist Brandon D'Leo.

Tuesday is the opening gala honoring the Kennedy Center; Wednesday is the Private Preview, and then Thursday the doors will open to the public. So whichever you're heading to, be there early so you can be the one to see it for yourself and break the news of its fabulousness first.

So on behalf of my clients and my own credit card, welcome to the neighborhood, dear Building o' Betsy!

Friday Fabulous: Grande Dame Hands

When I was ten, I took a modeling class at Saks Fifth Avenue in Chevy Chase. That was back when they had the Gone With The Wind beautiful winding stair case that allowed you to make such a grand entrance to the floor below.

One thing that was ingrained into me from the class was that it is never, never acceptable to have chipped nail polish. A good manicure completes an outfit, makes you stand a smidge taller, and just gives you a bit more presence (much like floating down the old splendid staircase at 5555 Wisconsin).

However, I'm just not shelling out for a $90 spa mani/pedi, and who really has the time? I need the quick, clean, in-and-out dedicated manicure place that only seems to exist in NYC. Because left to my own devices, my nails look like a preschool art project.

Enter Nail Design in Bethesda . A manicure and pedicure: $35, including a pretty great calf massage--and killer massage chairs, too. Huge stacks of all the latest gossip mags, more OPI and Essie shades than you can shake a well-buffed fingernail at, and it's right across from great shopping at Daisy Too.

You're in, you're out, and you're off to make a grand entrances for the rest of the week.

Style Profile: Mary-Frances Wain

The saying "good things happen to good people" has never been proven more true than with style maven Mary-Frances Wain. She's gorgeous, incredibly dressed (being a former NM p.r. director certainly can't hurt), funny as they come, and as a non-profit consultant, she has her hand in just about every fabulous charity event in this town (including the MenzFit event October 4--yes, that's La Mer in your goodie bag, thankyouverymuch).

Here's a bit of insight into her style philosophy...

Name: Mary-Frances Wain

Occupation: Nonprofit Consultant

Children: 1, Sam, age 2

What's your "uniform?”I am an anti-uniform person, but if I have to answer that question it would definitely involve pants and a jacket, but not necessarily a suit, for business. Always heels, even though I’m almost six feet tall. For non-business occasions, just about anything goes..except for jeans and sneakers!

What is your secret fashion sin? Hmmm…I probably wear shoes waaay too long…after they have lived a long and fruitful life, I still will drag them out of the closet, when it is clear they need to be retired.

What's your favorite current fashion bargain? I love H&M and Zara…and have just discovered drugstore.com!!!

What's your favorite fashion splurge? Again, my thoughts run to shoes. (Editor's note: I can TOTALLY vouch for that. Prada comes to mind...)

What are your favorite stores? I love Nana on U Street. Jackie, the owner, is adorable. And, Sarah, knows my style – even if I don’t – and calls or emails when something comes in that I might like. Smart girl!

What do you see as your biggest shopping challenge? Again, almost six feet tall…finding pants that are long enough!!!

What’s your beauty secret? Dove soap.

Wednesday Q&A: Waiting It Out

Q From D:I'm a 38 year old woman with three kids ages 3, 19 months, and 6 weeks. I am still in transition clothing, but I would love to feel a little more put together and clean out my closet a bit. However, I'm not sure this is the right time. Do you recommend I shop now or should I wait until I can fit into some of my pre-pregnancy clothes?

Thanks in advance for your time.

A From Joyce: First of all, congratulations!

As a mother of three myself, I've been there, and know exactly the frustration you're feeling.

Luckily, there are so many wonderfully-priced lines these days that you can spend a little and get a great transition wardrobe. If you want to splurge, I would invest in a great coat, shoes and bag, and a few fun accessories (like a great necklace) that are all keepers for the longterm.

For your wardrobe staples, try these:
A crisp white blouse (Target Mossimo Long-Sleeve Pleated Tux Top, $17.99)

An empire top (if you're nursing, check out this Gap Empire Nursing Top, $28.50)

Grab a pair of black pants or a cute A-line skirt from H&M, and voila!--new wardrobe for little beans.

My Closet: A Little Reflection

An absolute must in everyone’s closet: a full length mirror. Sounds so obvious, though it's amazing how many people don't have one.

Before you head out the door, you must see your entire outfit head to toe (and front to back: yes...turn....around). How else will you know if you look good? (No, standing on your toilet, or jumping up high to get a quick look at the full ensemble doesn't count).

Each week I work with my clients helping them accentuate what they like and embrace what they don’t. So find clothes to enhance your individual body shape, and hold your head up high. Look in that mirror with kind eyes, as if you are looking at your best friend. Remember that you are your own worst critic, so give yourself a once over, focus on the positives, tuck and tweak, and head out.

Make you mirror your friend. Focus in on what you love about your body, even if it something small, like that cute freckle on your little toe. Work it!

Monday Monologue

Last week was craziness! Between the District Sample Sale and my many fabulous finds; reading everything I could get my hands on to see how the trends for spring were taken by the buyers and editors; plus finding out about the magic behind the Ralph Lauren anniversary party (the team behind him: brilliant all), it was a crazy fashion week!

So this week, I think I'm going to take it a bit slow. There are benefits every night this week, magazine parties galore, but I think I'm going to relish in my DSS finds, do my client runs, blog a bit, and all around take it a bit easy. Ahhh.

Friday Fabulous: Nina Favorita!

I just finished Nina Garcia's new book, The Little Black Book of Style. It’s a quick read filled with great tips on how to create your own fashion style while following a few basic rules, and being that she always looks spot-on, I think she's a great inspiration.

In fact, chapter three is titled "Inspirations," and it made me think about those whose fashion has played an inspirational role in my own life.

There are many, but it was my grandmother’s best friend, Mildred, who I truly idolize. That woman can dress: always putting together rich textures that I never would have thought of myself, and of course has a closet of accessories for each outfit. She makes it look effortless, which is the sign of a true fashion maven.

Throughout the book, Nina shows her great sense of humor, which made it fun to read. The illustrations were done by Ruben Toledo: I want to wall paper a power room with his work!

But I think my favorite parts are the quotes, from so many types of sources, all with the thread of style running through them. Anyone who can incorporate a quote from Kurt Cobain into a book about fashion is someone I want to know.

Wednesday (Make that Friday) Q&A: Peeping in from Oxford

Sorry, it was an incredibly busy week, so it's time for a little catch-up..
Q from Denise: What do you think about those lace up high heels? I am not sure if I can get my head around those.

A From Joyce: Ah, the high heeled Oxford. I think they're fun, but are definitely a trend item.

The rule with being a stylish mom, as you know, is that you don't have to follow every trend (and who has time?), but you do need to pay attention to find those that fit your style (lest you find that it's been four years since you picked up a copy of Vogue--or a new pair of shoes bought solely for their comfort).

So back to the topic at hand: if this trend works for you (and I do think it's a fun way to spruce up a winter suit or pencil skirt), I suggest you don't make them an investment piece. The bootie found its way onto every runway last year, so they will not be a hot item for too much longer.

Try these on for size:
The Naso by Nine West ($109)
The Maran peep toe oxford by Vince Camuto.

My Closet: Talking To Myself

I have begun the task of reevaluating my fall clothes.

I do this for my clients every day-so I began talking to myself. Apparently, all is well, I'm doing fine (I asked and I told me).

First, I finally finished reading the phone books that are the fall issues right now, and reviewed the dvds for Fall 2008 lines just to start the creative process. I've also been taking lots of laps in the stores--mostly looking for very specific client pieces, but while I was there, I did a little browsing (all in the name of research!).

Next (today), I went through and tried on all my fall/winter clothes, removing what did not fit and what no longer held its shape. It was a bit warm for cashmere today, but well worth the exercise.

Then I did an evaluation of the things that did fit--found a few moth holes in aforementioned cashmere, a few loose buttons, and a whole lot of shoes and boots that need a visit to their favorite cobbler.

Once you (or I) go through these steps, you'll start to see the key pieces you'll need to finish your wardrobe--and you'll realize that you already probably have a lot of great pieces already there!

My favorites that I'm keeping for this fall:
1. A black pair of wide leg pants
2. A great wool cap
3. A funky cuff bracelet
4. A snakeskin bag

And as for what I'm going to buy? Well, that's for another day...

This Week's Event: T-Minus Three!

What a wonderful weekend: beautiful weather, good shopping, and a fabulous party at photographer Abby Greenawalt's very cool Capitol Hill photo studio (thanks for hosting us, Abby!).

Now looking forward: Wednesday is the District Sample Sale! I've heard the raffle is spectacular (a $10 ticket for charity that can get you everything from a Chef's tasting dinner at Proof to a $350 gift certificate at Relish--according to my source, there are 18 spectacular prizes in all this year.

I'm also told that you should get there at least a 1/2 hour before doors open (6pm for VIPs, 7 for the masses). People start the line up to 2 hours before the doors open, but they will be checking people off down the line, so everyone should be able to enter fairly quickly.

I also asked about payment policies: not all stores will take credit cards, but a lot will. But be sure to bring your ID, a backup, and cash just in case.

As for the clothing selection, you'll find fall items in there as well as end-of-season summer items: check out Zelaya, Lettie Gooch, Maggie and Lola for starters.

Make Up Test

As I was racing through Nordstrom this week looking for the perfect fall jacket for a client, I spotted what looked like a little brown journal. I opened it up to find that it was, in fact, the solution to my morning make up routine.

Power of Makeup Simply Chic by Trish McEvoy

One palate with two lip/cheek colors, one all over face color, one blush, two eye shadows, one shimmer glaze eye shadow, and one definer, all in completely wearable, flattering shades.

I've had one of her Makeup Planners (a combination of cosmetic bag and binder, which allows you to store makeup like pages--a brilliant concept) for years, but it has seen better days and the crocodile patterned cases she introduced for fall look great (though the smallest one will set you back $55).

This palate is perfect for day: totally natural colors that work together to create a fresh clean look and the case is small enough to fit in your purse. This makes me very happy.

Wednesday Q&A: Fall Sprucing

Q from Linda: I don't want to invest in a whole new wardrobe for fall. Can you suggest some key pieces to buy?

A from Joyce: To keep current without redoing your entire wardrobe, here is what I recommend:

Look for a three quarter sleeve jacket. One suggestion: JCrew’s felted-wool Pippa jacket ($195; it also comes in forever-classic houndstooth as well for $325)

Buy a fabulous big handbag. Handbags are all over the map for fall from xxs to xxl, but a clutch for a mom? Completely unrealistic, so go big. Tory Burch's silver crinkled leather tote is $425 or Betsey Johnson's London Dome Satchel ($295), both at Bloomingdales.com

And if you dare, the last must-have item this season a great pair of ankle boots. The choices and price points are endless, from the faux-suede Hassel at Payless.com ($29.99) to Christian Louboutin's black suede Goya booties at Saks.com ($945. I also love the Lapano loafer which juxtaposes the trendy bootie, ups the ante with a zipper, yet with a patent loafer front--very fun!). Paired with opaque hose, these will make you look of-the-moment (and if you spend at the lower end of the scale, you won't feel of-the-poorhouse).

ISO: A Good Home
(must be loving and have a suede brush)

I have a pair of Rebecca Sanver red suede wedges with really awesome embellishments on the heels. They are beautiful.

I have never worn them.

At the time of purchase, I was so mesmerized by their coolness that I didn't even realize they were too wide for my feet.

So now what? Just give them away? Keep them on my shelf and just admire them?

This is a dilemma we all face, whether its shoes, tops, dresses, men….

Here are a few options:
1.) Host a clothing swap. invite 10 friends over for cocktails and shopping. Have each person bring 10 in-season items that are in good shape (read: no yellowed T-shirts..). Items that they would wear if they fit, or they weren't sick of them, or they bought but, say, didn't realize that they were too wide. Trade away.

2.) Have a sale. Consignment shops, Craig's List, Ebay, even the Washington Post classifieds are options for good designer clothing that needs a good home.

3.) Suit up for charity. Professional suiting is always needed for charities such as Suited for Change--but note that 90% of their clients are sized 16 or higher, so call to see what their current needs are first.

4.) Pay it forward: drop it off at the Salvation Army, for some stylish but strapped 22 year old Hill staffer to find and cherish (while helping a good cause at the same time!).

As for Ms. Sanver and her red suede fabulousness, they went to a friend who I knew had been eyeing them (and whose feet were a perfect match). And now I have room on my shelf for a new even cooler pair of shoes that will actually fit.

That Mom Recommends: Stack 'Em Up!

We'll return to the Thursday Style Profile next week. But for now, it's TGIF!
One thing I've always meant to do (in between PTA meetings, dinner fixings and client 911s) is to stack my shoes in those clear plastic boxes--with the Polaroid picture affixed on the front, just like you see when they profile a socialite in Bazaar.

I just discovered the ones I've been searching for at Ikea. They are practically perfect. White shoe boxes with a flap down lid and clear window for easy viewing (and big enough for men's shoes, too!). Finally: no more searching for the other black shoe for an hour in the bottom of your closet.

Best of all: they are 4 for $9.99. Organization, cheap!

If you don't have a Polaroid, you can also print out digital photos onto labels (list brand, color, size), or, what the heck, just write it on the box with a Sharpie, sans photo.

Have a great weekend!

Wednesday Q&A: The Little (Black?) Dress

Q from Elizabeth:I am tired of feeling like the unstylish, disheveled mom when I pick up my twins from school. I keep seeing these cute short dressed in the stores, but how is a mother of two little boys supposed to wear these without feeling silly?

A from Joyce: First, take it easy on yourself. You have twins. That's not twice the work, it's about quadruple. As for the dresses, be not afraid: these little dresses, which are everywhere right now, will become your best friend. For starters, it's one-piece dressing, which will simplify your dressing routine.

A shift dress has a straight cut from shoulders to your knee (hiding mid section bumps and bulges), creating a sleek straight torso. Look for one with three-quarter sleeves-it will slim your arm and by showing arm you will create a longer silhouette. Try pairing with dark tights (they will thin the appearance of your legs) and a cute pair of flats–with this look you will feel great and be able to keep up with your children (and look smashing--just ask the other moms!).

Have a style question? Email me and your Q&A could be next!

My Closet: The Tools Within

Much like a makeup artist has her bags of brushes and cremes (and magic) and a doctor has her bag of stethoscopes and, well, whatever else she has in there, I have my bail-out bag--the things that I have to have whether styling for a photo shoot or getting myself ready on the go.

Here is my list of must-haves:

Match Sticks double stick tape (definitely the best brand out there)

Shoe polish (also good for scratches in your table!)

Safety pins (self explanatory)

Thread and needle (you probably have 50 hotel sets of these in your linen closet)

Scholl Party Feet - Invisible Gel Heel Cushions (again, the best I've found: they're washable and clear so discreet even in the strappiest of shoes)

The Original Gal Pal Garment Deodorant Remover (just buy a bunch and have them on hand--available at the Container Store)

Baby wipes (key for stain removal and odor removal, too).

Masking tape (for taping the bottom of model's shoes for the runway--you don't think they would just let them wear $600 shoes without taking precautions, do you?).

Just take them all, throw it in a makeup bag, and keep it in your car, your desk drawer, wherever you go, and you'll always be perfectly put together (or be able to fake it in a pinch!).

This Week's Event: FREEDOM!

Not exactly a shopping event, but this is better than 20 holidays and events all rolled into one!

As the alarm goes off before the sun rises a smile comes over my face.

Yes, today is the First Day of School.

After a long and wonderful summer, our little dears are heading back to the Land of The Learned, where teachers rule and moms get back to the business of whatever it is that they have needed to do but couldn’t all summer.

For me, it's the beauty of leaving for work in the morning and returning to a clean house (that is, until the children come piling in dropping bookbags in search of snacks and remote controls). It is truly the most wonderful time of year.

So once the kids have left the house, take a few moments for yourself. Whether it's three minutes to serenely sip some coffee before making a mad dash to the office (blame your lateness on the school buses), or heading to Starbucks after dropping them off yourself, or organizing a few things in your closet before tackling the summer's worth of tracked-in dirt on your carpet (or finally making that phone call to me!), just take a moment all for yourself, and relish in the freedom. And the quiet. It's a moment very much deserved.

That Mom Recommends: String Torture

A few months ago I went to have my eyebrows waxed, and they suggested that I try threading. "Sure, anything to look good," I naively thought.

As the tears slid down my cheeks, I vowed never to go back to that evil woman again. They actually use sewing thread to rip out your hair! (The process involves a twisted piece of thread that picks up and removes each hair to create a really precise hairline).

But over the next few days I found myself admiring my once patchy eyebrows, now looking fabulous with great high arches (and no wax burns, or without me trying to even up my brows and completely overdoing it).

My goodness, this woman is a genius.

So, now once every few weeks I muster up the courage and walk thru that Red Door and come out feeling just gorgeous.

Sited: Christina Hendricks of DC Mom

Mix the grace of Audrey Hepburn, the business prowess of Kate Spade and the wise-cracking sassiness of Alice from the eponymous TV show and you get Christina Hendricks. As the founder of DC's key mom activity resource, she is incredibly tuned in to all things Mom in the DC area--plus she's hilarious, generous, and incredibly friendly, too! Here's some insider info on the style maven behind one of my favorite mom websites...

Name: Christina Hendricks

Occupation: Website owner, go DCmom.com!, IT Consultant and Mom

Children: I have three very active kids – two girls that are 9 and 7 and one boy who is 5 who always seem to be asking or talking to me at exactly the same time!

What's your "uniform?” I’m a big fan of killer jeans and a great black t-shirt. Always looks good and in today’s world there is only a slim chance that you may be underdressed.

What is your secret fashion sin? I have a couple of completely threadbare t-shirts from back in the day…they are hideous and are advertising completely inappropriate places to drink beer but darn are they comfortable!

What's your favorite current fashion bargain? I scour sales racks at almost any place I am in…so that’s how I amass my bargains. I also think one of the greatest bargains ever is Jergens Natural Glow moisturizer. Ok, it’s not clothing, but it really keeps that pasty look at bay and anytime you have a bit of color even a bargain looks like a million bucks.

What's your favorite fashion splurge? I go crazy every time I am up in NYC and buy lots of Bond fragrances – Chelsea Flowers is one of my favorites. TSE Cashmere hoodies are great too – except my oldest daughter constantly steals them from me!

What are your favorite stores? Barneys, Bloomies, Saks and the local DC boutiques like Alex, Periwinkle and more. Plus, a trip to Forever 21 or Loehmann’s (what can I say, I am a diehard) always seems to turn up something.

What do you see as your biggest shopping challenge? Finding time to shop without children! My kids are always with me, so the challenge is figuring out what’s the best bribe for that day to keep them quiet and content while I shop. Plus my seven year fashionista has a strong opinion about everything I try on in front of her – which is both good and bad since I try not to dress like the tween idol she would like me to look like!

What’s your beauty secret? I wear tons of sunscreen. I happen to love Kiehl’s Facial Moisturizer, it is awesome and keeps the sun blocked all day, slather it on and you don’t have to think about it again. It’s what climbers use when they scale Mt. Everest, so I figure it’s good enough for the car pool lane.

Wednesday Q&A: Catty in the Classroom

Q from Anon: My daughter's school is a bit, ahem, competitive amongst the mommies. I volunteer there one day a week. Jeans aren't an option, but I need to be in something that will look at least a bit chic--while dealing with 4 year olds and their craft projects. Advice?

A from Joyce: I'm a fan of tunics as an easy fix—they fit and flatter, are not too dressy but always look put-together, and it's a classic cut that always looks age appropriate (and, truth be told, a patterned one will hide stains well!). While jeans in their normal state may not be acceptable, a dark, dressier pair would fit the bill—Ernest Sewn makesa great pair, the Decca.93.

Next, scout out the flats that are everywhere this fall—from TRB's new quilted Revas to the Abaete Lenox flat from Payless (for $25)! And, most importantly, don't forget your lipstick to tie it all together (spend some time at your favorite counter or drugstore and find your perfect red now: red is the new…red for fall!).

Have a style dilemma? Email me your question and maybe you'll be next Wednesday's Q&A!

Dripping in Sweats

I do try to look my best every day, but I am juggling one incredible job, three kids, one husband, 800 things on my ever-growing to-do list, oh, and a blog (but you, I love). But that's not to say I don't have my super-casual days.

Here's a little insight into my closet...

It never fails, the day you leave your house dressed in sweats you run into someone you haven’t seen in years (yup, that would be my college boyfriend). The only consolation was that I was wearing makeup.

I usually just wear sweatpants at home or en route to the gym--at least that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Though one way I keep my good clothes looking new longer is by changing into sweats when I get home for the evening (yes, Mr. Rogers was right: it was that cardy that kept the rest of his wardrobe in tiptop shape for 30 years, I'm sure!).

Juicy is my favorite: terry in the summer, velour in the winter (good thing they just opened one new outpost in VA, with another on the way in Georgetown). They have a Henley Dress out for fall that's just gorgeous and comfy as well.

I am sure my husband thinks I wear my sweats all day, everyday (though the fact that he tends not to notice the details-or rather that he doesn't sweat them, is one reason why we're such a perfect pair!).

West Elm Opens Downtown!

West Elm, the modern, well-priced resource that has lots of sleek pieces and cool organizational storage items, opens today in a humongous, three-story space on 10th and G. I venture over to their Tyson's store when I can, but like having a downtown alternative as well!

Check out their closet organizational pieces--for the gorgeous closet of a Park Ave Social without the Madison Ave price tag (the downside is that these particular items are only available online at the moment).

That Mom Recommends...

The two things I always recommend right off the bat are to get a new bra and get a great tailor.

In downtown Bethesda, my recommendation for the later is Mr. Lee at Super Cleaners USA on Hampden Lane. He does original hems (where they move the original hem on your jeans up, instead of sewing a new one that never quite matches), a great French cuff, and has saved my clients (and me!) thousands by reworking out-of-date dresses, suits and pants.

He's quick, accurate and friendly to boot (and did I mention his great work with boot cuts?).

Best of all, parking is easy and they do a great job dry cleaning as well.

Do you have a spa, a mani/pedi place, a restaurant, a gym or any other fabulous, practical place you'd like to recommend in the DC/MD/VA area? Please email me and maybe you and your recommendation will be featured next!

Styling and Profiling: Mary Amons

For my first interview of a stylish mom, I thought I would introduce you to Mary Amons of the District Sample Sale. In addition to being a founder and chair of the event, she started a charity called Labels for Love which benefits women's and children's causes--and she's a full time mom. Read on...

Name: Mary Schmidt Amons

Occupation: Mom, wife, and founder of Labels for Love, Inc.

Children: 5 (!)

Your "uniform”: In summer, it's tennis wear, because I'm usually running around all day, with little time to focus on my outift. When I’m working or want to dress comfortably, I tend to gravitate to my favorite pair of jeans (skinnies this past year), always boots in the winter (my shoe collection tends to be more summer/spring focused due to my boot fetish) and a cool top with some funky jewelry to add some style.

Your secret fashion sin: (eg., do you still wear scrunchies when you think no one is looking? Any one thing in your closet you can’t bear to throw out, fashion police be damned?) I asked for my husband’s opinion on this (never a good idea when actually looking for what you want to hear!). He called me out on my comfy jammie pants that I have had for years (all 5 rotating pairs from Scoop, each a different color (faded and a little saggy in the rear now)…he mistakenly takes it as a subliminal message that there’s no shot.

Favorite current fashion bargain: I have found some very cool pieces at Forever 21, while shopping with my daughter. Good, one season t’s and basics. I also was bummed when C-Mart decided to open another location, and everyone figured out the secret. I have found some amazing top designer bargains there. Bluefly and Yoox are two favorite websites, as well as my twice-weekly dose of Shop It to Me.

Favorite fashion splurge: Boots – all styles! Henry Beguelin, Chloe, Martin Margiela, Dries Van Noten are my favorites.

Favorite stores: Alex Boutique, Barneys, Muleh, Relish, and all of the fabulous boutiques that support the District Sample Sale! They are all amazing, and DC is so fortunate to have access to great shopping, and fabulous store owners who offer personal attention and fashionable advice!

Biggest shopping challenge: Avoiding impulse buying, as well as gravitating to the same pieces that already exist in my closet. I have learned to stay away from the 3 week old Last Call racks at Neimans. It only gets me into trouble. A good friend gave me a piece of advice once: if its on the sale rack, it's there for a reason. I’m getting more realistic in being able to recognize a real bargain, but who doesn’t love a deal?

Beauty secret: Besides botox? (it’s rid me of migraines, so it’s a medical necessity now!) It's staying active, playing tennis, laughing with my kids, eating healthy (raw, when I can), drinking good wine (a must!), wearing proper sunscreen, getting away with my husband, and most importantly, nurturing my inner spirit, as it is directly reflected on the outside.

Wednesday Q&A: The Balancing Act

Every Wednesday I'll answer your style questions. Here's the first installment...
Q from Merle: So, here's my issue. I am big busted and short waisted. Do you have any suggestions to allude to a longer mid section? Sometimes I feel my bust is resting on my waist. HELP! And it doesn't help matters that I am short, too.

A from Joyce: Merle, you are not alone—this is one of the most common questions I come across. The goal is to divide the space between your chest and waist and balance out your proportions.

A good bra is key, though I would take it one step past just "great support" and go for one in the "push up" category (see a good article here).

Overall, structured clothes that fit close to your body (not tight) will draw out your silhouette. On top, scoop necks or a V that isn't too plunging will flatter without over-emphasizing your assets, while bringing the eye up to your face and neck adding inches to your frame. A one-button jacket fitting right below the bustline will also create a longer midsection.

As for your waist, there are a whole crop of mid-rise pants and jeans out for fall, which give a lower waist that's actually wearable. A boot cut or wide legged cut (with heels of course!) will elongate your legs and create more balance.

Finally, I can't emphasize this enough--retrain your posture. All of us, with the exception of perhaps Gwyneth Paltrow, could improve this. And when you're large-chested, slouching is an almost inevitable habit. "Chest out, shoulders back" is flattering on everyone, and will divide your assets up, making both look smaller.

Email your question to me at joyce@bethatmom.com and maybe you'll be next week's recipient of on-the-house That Mom advice!

Questions Besides "Why Mommy? Why?"

(...and answers besides "Because I'm the Mommy, that's why.")

One of my services is the "Dressing Room 911". It can happen at any time of the day (though peak times are usually between 11-2 and then again between 6-8), and it can happen from any location (home, store, I've even taken one from a car).

It's the "HEEEEEELP!!!" call--where a mom is holed up in a dressing room, unable to make a buy/not buy decision, or in her closet and has no idea what to wear to a party, an interview, a big important meeting (the car call was a shoe dilemma).

So now I offer you a bit of that gratis. Email me your style questions, or post them in the comments, and I'll post them and respond here.

You don't get the benefit of a 30-second response time, but you will get some straightshooting advice on the house!

District Sample Sale

...no three chicer words have ever crossed my lips!

First, truth in advertising: I'm on the host committee for this season (called the Haute Committee, no less! I'm so thrilled to play a role in this year's event!).

All that fashion, all those discounts, in one giant warehouse! As stylist and avid clothes collector, the mere mention of this
incredible event makes my heart beat faster. And the fact that it raises funds for great causes (this season, it's Miriam's House), makes it even better.

This is your chance to own all those quality basics I always recommend, as well as the hot fashionable pieces you want to add
into your wardrobe without breaking your piggy bank.

Okay, now that I have you salivating, see the participating stores below:

…and I haven't even mentioned the drinks (including Snow Queen Martinis!). And hors d'oeuvres (from Nage, Renaissance M Street and Occasions). And music (from Eric Hilton and Frederico Aubele). And afterparty (at Morton's brand new bar, 1221). And the raffle (always phenomenal).

See you there (I'll be the one with all the overflowing shopping bags).

Think Fall!

It may be hot outside (!), but if you've taken reprieve in an air conditioned store or two, you've noticed that fall is around the corner. Say goodbye to your shorts and tees and hello to real fashion.

In last month's issue of Bethesda Magazine, I shared my list of top shopping strategies. Here it is, with a few extra pointers:

1. Go out, right now, and get a new bra. It is amazing what a difference it will make. Chantelle is my go-to brand of choice.
2. Make a shopping list: literally go through your closet, think about what you're missing, and write it down. Focusing will make your shopping trip so much more productive.
3. Tailor the clothes you already have. Shorten a skirt, take in that jacket that's just a bit too big and boxy, tweak the legs on your favorite but outdated pants. Voila! New wardrobe.
4. Leave the children at home. As much as we love our little dears-shop without them, lest you come home with a sweater you don't love but it was close enough and it was time for a new diaper.
5. When you find the perfect jeans-buy two pairs. One boot/heel length and one for flats. Sounds extravagant, but not if you wear them every day.
6. Make careful investments. Buy quality timeless pieces that will last. Even if it's just one great thing a season, do it.
7. Resole worn shoes and keep them clean and polished. A trashed pair of heels can kill a an otherwise perfect ensemble.

Let me know how you do!

How to be That Mom

First, let's go through your closet. What works? What doesn't? What have you been wearing past its' expiration date?

We'll take stock of what you have, what you need,
and how to work within your budget (from boutiques to box stores, we'll find the solution!).

Next, let's shop! With a hit list and a schedule, we'll piece together the perfect wardrobe that fits your lifestyle. My job is to know not only what you need, but what's out there and how the two work together.

And if you don't have the time (or just can't bear to shop), I can do it for you. I'll bring an edited list to your house, we'll go through them piece by piece, and put together the wardrobe that you've been looking for--the one that will make you THAT Mom.
